John W. Tai - senior advisor at Pamir Consulting and adjunct professor, Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University - was recently interviewed by Channel News Asia about issues on relations with US and China and the Taiwan Presidential Elections, he made the following points:
1. The closeness of the presidential race showed that Taiwan voters were as interested in domestic issues as they were concerned about China's threat to Taiwan.
2. China would likely continue to use various means at is disposal to influence Taiwan, even after the elections.
3. The United States continues to be interested in maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and its actions, including the sending of former senior US officials to Taiwan after the elections, would be aimed at expressing this position while reassuring Taiwan of US support.
